The official adult ticket (ages 18–64) is €20. Youth aged 6–17 and seniors 65+ pay €15, children under 6 enter free, and a family ticket for two adults and two youths is €60. No. Quinta da Regaleira is run by the private Fundação CulturSintra, so the Lisboa Card gives no free entry or discount here, unlike Sintra’s state-run sites such as Pena Palace. Because entry is by timed slot, the official €20 ticket already gives you a reserved time, so you are not paying purely to skip a line. A reseller skip-the-line ticket adds an audio guide, free cancellation and an easy English checkout. If those matter to you, the small premium is worth it; if you only want the lowest price, book the official ticket direct.

The estate opens daily at 10:00 AM. It closes at 6:30 PM from October to March and 7:30 PM from April to September, with last admission at 5:30 PM year-round. Last admission is 5:30 PM in every season. Since a full visit takes two to three hours, that is genuinely the latest sensible entry time, and you would be moving briskly with the indoor spaces closing first. For an unhurried visit, arrive by early afternoon at the latest, and ideally right at the 10:00 AM opening when the estate is quietest.

Entry is booked for a 30-minute slot between 10:00 AM and around 5:00 PM. You do not have to arrive exactly on time; there is a one-hour grace period after your slot. Arrive later than that window, though, and you can be refused entry. Booking an early slot is smart because the Initiation Well queue builds through the morning.

It is open almost every day of the year, closing only on January 1, December 24, 25 and 31. Because it is privately managed, its calendar is independent of the state-museum schedule. Around the Christmas and New Year period, or if you are traveling a long way, confirm the exact dates and any adjusted hours on the official site first.

Take the train from Lisbon’s Rossio station to Sintra, roughly 40 minutes. From Sintra station it is a 10–15 minute walk (about 1.5–1.8 km) or a short ride on bus 435, the hop-on-hop-off loop that stops at Regaleira for around €5.50. It is about 1.5 to 1.8 km, a 10–15 minute walk that is partly uphill and along narrow roads. Many visitors enjoy the walk, which passes through the historic center, but if you would rather not climb, bus 435 stops right by the estate. Wear comfortable shoes either way, since the estate itself is steep once you are inside.

Not directly. Pena Palace sits on the opposite hillside and is served by a different bus, the 434, so you generally return toward the Sintra center and switch. The Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) is the estate’s signature feature: an inverted underground tower about 27 meters deep, lined with a spiral staircase of around nine landings and a Templar cross inlaid at the base. No. The Initiation Well is one-directional, so you descend the spiral staircase only, entering at the top and exiting through the tunnel at the bottom. This makes it the estate’s busiest bottleneck, and a queue builds through the morning. The single best tactic is to book an early slot and head straight for the well before the crowds arrive.

Beyond the Initiation Well, the highlights are the underground tunnels and grottoes, the smaller Unfinished Well, the Neo-Manueline Palácio da Regaleira, the esoteric chapel, the Regaleira Tower, and the gardens with their lakes and a cascade crossed by stepping stones. Yes. Alongside the famous Initiation Well there is a smaller Unfinished Well, also called the Imperfect Well (Poço Imperfeito), which has straight stairs rather than a spiral. Allow two to three hours. The estate is larger than it looks, with gardens, grottoes, two wells, tunnels, the palace and the chapel spread across a steep hillside, and you will want time to explore rather than march through. Children often love the tunnels and wells, but the terrain is steep, hilly and uneven, with cobbles, many steps and a narrow spiral staircase that can be wet, so it is not fully accessible or stroller-friendly. Arrive right at the 10:00 AM opening. The first hour is the quietest, the light is good for photos, and you can reach the Initiation Well before the queue forms.
